Trigger Point InjectionsTrigger points are knots or spasms within muscles that can form from stress or an inability to relax, and can grow severe enough to irritate nearby nerves and cause shooting pain down the extremities.Injections are performed in an exam room by your preferred physician. Target areas are found with manual palpation and typically marked with a skin pen, then the skin is cleaned with alcohol and prepped.
What to ExpectA sterile mixture of local anesthetic, and in some cases a corticosteroid, is injected into the targeted areas to relieve muscle tension and provide pain relief.Contrast dye is injected to further ensure correct needle placement. Once placement is confirmed, this part of the procedure typically takes around five minutes to complete.Immediate relief from the anesthetic may wear off after several hours, while corticosteroid relief can take up to two weeks. Some patients need more than one session.
