Shingles Pain Management
Caused by reactivation of the chickenpox virus, shingles produces a painful rash and nerve irritation that can persist long after healing.Early intervention is key. Our team offers targeted techniques and medication management to relieve pain and prevent long-term complications.
Symptoms and Causes
Chickenpox is caused by the varicella-zoster virus. Once infected, the body never fully clears it. The virus lies dormant in the nerves near the spine for years, held at bay by the immune system. As we age and immunity weakens, the virus can reactivate as shingles. Most patients feel pain in a linear pattern on one side of the body, which precedes a rash in the same area. The most common area is the thoracic or chest wall region, followed by the head and face. The painful rash usually lasts one to two weeks.

When to Seek Care
See your primary care provider first to confirm the diagnosis. Acute shingles is treated with an antiviral medication, which helps reduce the duration and severity of pain.In up to 20 percent of patients the pain persists beyond six months, developing into postherpetic neuralgia. X-ray-guided injections around the affected nerve are more effective the earlier they are given. If you had shingles in the past and still have pain in that area, a specialist can evaluate which options fit. The next step is a conversation.
