Relieving Pain. Restoring Hope.

Superion ® Indirect Decompression System (IDS)

About The Treatment

Superion Indirect Decompression System (IDS) is a minimally invasive treatment option for patients suffering from severe low back and radicular pain as well as associated symptoms including numbness, tingling, and muscle weakness. The Superion implant is a small titanium device that opens tight spaces in the spine caused by spinal stenosis. Spinal stenosis is associated with severe lower extremity symptoms including pain and weakness. This treatment can allow patients to avoid a much more invasive back surgery after they have failed more conservative treatment options. Desert Pain Specialists physicians are among the first physicians in Southern Utah to perform this FDA-approved procedure and provide patients with another option to avoid invasive back surgery.

Introducing The Superion ® Indirect Decompression System (IDS)

Patients may be considered a candidate for the Superion procedure after failing conservative, non-surgical treatment options for at least 6 months with continued, severe low back pain with radicular symptoms. During the procedure, your physician will confirm the correct area using fluoroscopic (x-ray) imaging and make a small incision at the targeted treatment site. The Superion is then placed between the targeted vertebrae and opened to remain in place. This procedure typically takes under one hour and is performed at an outpatient surgical center.

The goal of this procedure is to open spinal pathways while patients with spinal stenosis are in a standing position, eliminating the need to bend forward while walking or standing. Contact your Desert Pain Specialists physician if you believe this may be a good option for your symptoms.
