Relieving Pain. Restoring Hope.

Caudal Steroid Injection

About the treatment

A caudal steroid injection is a minimally invasive treatment option for patients suffering from chronic low back and radicular pain affecting the lower limbs. Pain in these areas can be caused by many common conditions including herniated discs, bone spurs, sciatica, and many more. This procedure uses a corticosteroid medication and anesthetic mixture to relieve pain and reduce inflammation in the area. For this procedure, patients will be taken to a procedure suite and placed on an operating table. The injection site will be cleaned and the skin will be prepped with a local anesthetic to numb the skin. Once the skin is numb, your physician will insert a needle through the sacral hiatus, which is an opening at the lower end of the sacrum, and inject a contrast dye if applicable. Using a live fluoroscopy (x-ray) machine, the physician will ensure the correct area is being targeted throughout the injection. Your physician will then inject the steroid-anesthetic mixture into the inflamed nerves to reduce inflammation. When the procedure is complete, the needle will be removed and a bandage will be placed over the injection site.

After the treatment

After the procedure is complete, patients are sent to our recovery suite and observed for pain relief or adverse reaction. Patients are advised to avoid strenuous activity for 24 hours after the procedure. Your physician may also advise patients to apply ice packs, rest, and taking over-the-counter pain relievers. Patients should call the office immediately if symptoms including increased pain, fever, swelling, redness around the injection site, and other adverse side effects are noted.
